Review: Tudor Kitchen

This is the first product by Tudor Kitchen I have tried.

Tudor Kitchen Traditional Christmas Pudding

Price: Unknown
Weight: 100g
Calories: Unknown

Review:

The packaging was cheap looking and poorly designed. My main gripe, on the 100g version, is the tiny print, I couldn't read the cooking instructions as the text was too small.

Opening the package it did smell like a Christmas Pudding, not a strong aroma and there wasn't a distinctive alcoholic feel about it either.

When it came out of the bowl it kind of looked a little "held together", it didn't look much like a cake, more like a hockey puck. It tasted like a Christmas Pudding, the flavour wasn't too bad, nothing offensive. It didn't taste as though there were any nuts, alcohol or candied peel in it. The texture wasn't really to my liking, seems like a high level of suet was used or some kind of preservative, like gelatine. It got half way through the 100g pudding and felt as though I had enough.

Score: 3/10

Package wording: Too small for me to read.

Royal Mint Sixpence

This year the Royal Mint is offering authentic 1945 version of the sixpence for sale, the design which was generally available between 1920 through 1946. The sixpence dates back to the reign of Edward VI and were first struck in 1551. Pictured right is the 1787 version.

Originally the threepence coin was placed in Christmas Puddings, if someone found one in their pudding it would signify wealth in the coming year. It was also believed that children would eat more pudding as they were keen to find the money inside! When the threepence coins were phased out the silver sixpence coins replaced them in the puddings.

There is some controversy about putting coins in puddings for fear of tainting them or breaking your teeth. However, it seems that one company still sells Christmas Puddings with coins in them, called Tudor Kitchen, search for them online but here is a store called The British Shoppe that sells them.

The Great Christmas Pudding Song

Leslie Crowther was a celebrity in the UK born in Nottingham in 1933 and died in 1996.

He is probably best known for his appearance on the long running children's show Crackerjack but also had his own show along with hosting the UK version of The Price is Right. In 1968 he recorded the Great Christmas Pudding Song for the Pye label.

World's Oldest Christmas Pudding?

The Royal Naval Museum in the UK has been given what is possibly the world's oldest Christmas Pudding!

The pudding, pictured right, was just handed in to the Museum by a lady who had kept it in her kitchen cupboard since her husbands passing. The pudding is stored in a decorative tin, although looking a little worn out now after 111 years since it was made. The puddings were sent out to the British Naval Brigades serving out in South Africa in the year 1900. The pudding will be displayed at the Victorian Festival of Christmas, in Portsmouth, between 25th to 27th November, before it goes for restoration work.
